Pioneering data compliance for an education App.
New School is a startup that promotes access to quality and accessible education for young people, forming the protagonists of the future.
The challenge of this project was adapting the application to the General Data Protection Regulation, allowing the user to have full control over their information and avoiding any consequences for infringing it.
My Role
As a Product Designer, I had the pleasure to work with researchers, child-care specialists, an advocacy firm and other stakeholders.
My responsibilities included working on end to end through the process, by wireframing, prototyping, interviewing users, summarizing the data, conducting the cardsorting, usability testing and presenting the outcomes to the team.
Approach
To implement the data compliance, we did a series of interviews with young people and their parents to map their relationship with sharing personal data in apps.
The interviews were conducted with young people (13 to 17 years old) and their parents. With the consent of the participants, all interviews were recorded for later consultations.

Solution
The outcome contemplates a comprehensive data management system, which can be accessed through the main menu. This allows users to have complete control over their data, with the ability to download and delete it as desired. We have also provided explanations for camera, gallery, and microphone permissions, as well as control over shared data and the option to interrupt sharing at any time. Additionally, we have implemented good usability practices to ensure clarity and prevent unnecessary clicks. For minors under 13 years old, we have designed an authorization flow that allows responsible adults to monitor content, data, and purchases via SMS and email.
